Latrobe River Campsite
A 1997 Pajero Club Community
Project
Where is it? I hear you ask.
The picnic and campground
is located near the Latrobe
River approximately
half way between Powelltown and
Noojee just
off the Powelltown/Noojee
Road about
100 metres along the
Ada River Road. It is in the Yarra State Park.
It consists
of a day picnic area with shelter, several secluded campsites, a larger general campsite and a centrally located toilet block.
A bush track allows access to the river and a walk along
the river is available.
For the
fishermen/women
it’s possible to drop a line in the
river and catch a meal.
The Pajero
4WD
Club of Victoria has been
involved with the
Department of Sustainability
and Environment
(DSE)
concerning
this site since 1997.
The aim was to develop
the site for
visitors to enjoy
as a day trip or camping
ground. DSE would supply the materials
and designs and the Pajero Club would provide
the work force to complete the task.
Since the
beginning of our association with the DSE
on this project the Club have constructed a toilet block, the day shelter, installed fire places, installed
tables and benches
and replaced those
that have been taken or damaged over the years.
DSE approached us recently to assist with some site improvements that where needed at
the site.
Improvements included the
establishment of extra vehicle based
campsites, installation of new signs, installation of fireplaces and redefining
the walking track
to the river.
There was also
some general maintenance of the site including the replacement of
two
support posts of the day shelter, which have suffered
an axe attack.
As part of the on going environmental approach the Pajero club believe we need
to keep our good relations with DSE in
Powelltown.
This
demonstrates that we as 4WD club members
do have a commitment to look after the
bush
and protect the
areas that have been set aside for use by ourselves and the public
in general.
Currently joint
efforts between government
departments and
committed public
groups are being encouraged.
It is in our own best interest to maintain the areas that
we have been involved in,
otherwise other groups could take over
and
all our past work and
involvement with
the DSE in Powelltown could be lost.
This continued joint effort will see further development of the site.
Proposals include:
·
Information boards,
·
possible additional campsites and
·
additional conveniences constructed with
grants provided by the government.
